Shockwave therapy is used to treat injured tissue, aid in healing and improve tissue function long term. The shock waves refer to acoustic sound waves and feel like a deep tapping sensation rather than a 'shock'. Some of the conditions for which it may be recommended include: sprains, tendinopathies, bursitis and conditions with increased inflammation.
The intensity of shockwave therapy is guided by the patient and the practitioner together. This is to ensure the correct intensity of treatment is utilised for tissue repair whilst remaining most comfortable for the patient. In order to receive the most benefit from the treatment, it is often recommended that patients receive multiple sessions of shockwave therapy. This will depend on the injury and goals of treatment but usually varies from 4 – 6 sessions.
